Functional Friday 9/20

Functional Fridays with Dr. Nick and Dr. Danny

Happy Friday! In case you missed it, the feds cut interest rates by 50 basis points this Wednesday— the first cut since 2020. That means lower mortgage rates, credit card APR, and auto financing costs. AKA more money for you to invest in your health 😉 Bonus: it’s also the fall equinox this Sunday. Spooky season is right around the corner 🎃

Are you more excited about the interest rate cuts or fall?

“A leader who doesn’t take accountability for their actions is like a ship without a captain.” John C. Maxwell

  • Have you ever struggled with accountability? I know I have. It’s always easy to assign blame and fault when something doesn’t go the way we want. “Those questions on that test were unfair”, “My business can’t grow because the market is too saturated”, “I stay on track with my diet and exercise most the time”. While there are of course circumstances that you cannot control, often, we have trouble holding ourselves accountable.

  • Were the questions unfair or you kind of studied for 3 hours and went out the night before your test (this was me too)

  • Are you devoting time to improving the holes in your bucket for your business? Practicing closes, creating advertisements, cold outreaches? Or are you spending your time trying to plug one hole only to temporarily cover it and move to the next? (still us to this day, but a work in progress!)

  • Theres a new diet and millions of exercise plans out there. They’re all like shiny objects. They seem promising — this is uninformed optimism. You begin trying one to find out you don’t like the changes you have to make to stick to it — this is informed pessimism. Surely the next diet or workout program will work, this one definitely will not. Some really may not, but are you trying long enough to really find out?

The point is, there are a lot of things we don’t take accountability for, that we should. We start navigating through life like a ship without a captain. Taking accountability allows us to become our own captains and guide our ships where we want them to go.

Last week we discussed healing times for different common injuries, this week we will take a slightly deeper dive into the three phases of recovery for a tendon injury (not to be confused with the phases of the temporary moon 🌚 for the next 2 months)

  • Stage 1: 😡 Inflammatory stage (0-7 days) - The body’s immediate response to injury. Similar to when you get a cut and the area gets red and swollen. Your body sends special cells to the tendon to clean up damaged tissue and bring healing factors to the area.

  • Stage 2: 🛠️ Repair stage (7 days-6 weeks) - During this phase, the body starts to build new tissue to repair the tendon. Similar to patching a hole in a wall - the tissue isn’t as strong quite yet. It lays the groundwork and foundation for future rebuilding and strength. While you may be feeling better here, this is also when the tendon is its weakest.

  • Stage 3: 🏗️ Remodeling phase (6 weeks - 6+ months) - In the final phase, the tendon gets stronger and more organized. The body is rebuilding the tendon similar to a house being built, making sure everything is in the right place and solid. This phase takes the longest because tendons don’t get a lot of blood flow — causing them to heal slowly.

Stay tuned for next weeks newsletter where we go over how physical therapy can help ensure a timely recovery and reduce any set backs.
