Movement is medicine
Functional Fridays with Dr. Nick and Dr. Danny
Happy Friday! Football is back in full swing! In case you missed it, the Ravens lost by a literal toe. If Isiah Likely’s foot was one size smaller they may have won the game. Go Patriots 😉

“Movement is the only way you have of affecting the world around you.”
Curious?
There is a common stigma that people of a certain population such as, over the age of 50, under the age of 14, or low back injury, should stop performing certain movements.
For example, “people over 50 should stop performing pull up, push ups, deadlifts, and squatting with weights”. This is a REAL suggestion by an orthopedic doctors association. HUH?!
What is the benefit from saying something like this? Do they expect people over or near the age of 50 to stop picking up boxes, laundry baskets, or toys from the ground? To stop picking up their grand children? To avoid getting on the floor because they should’t push themselves up? It makes no sense.
When you have a “reputable source” (orthopedic doctors) suggesting people of this age stop these movements what happens? These people stop doing these things and start losing function!
No one should have the power to dictate what movements you can and cannot do but yourself. YOU make that informed decision.
Of course, if you have concerns about a movement, seek professional help! There are so many great resources in 2024
Physical therapists
Personal trainers
If you’re a DIY’er, even Youtube!
The point is, give yourself the power to decide what movements you do and don’t do. If you decide pull ups aren’t for you anymore or never were, thats fine! If you have no reason to squat anymore, great (but hint, you’ll always need to squat).
Whatever it is, don’t stop moving and make sure to educate yourself, even when someone tells you to stop.
Movement is medicine.
